Despite the Cape Flats where the vast majority of marginalised people reside, having been plagued by poverty, unemployment and despair for many years, and following the recent crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic + steep food and fuel prices. These adverse conditions have placed severe pressure on our beloved community that are already struggling to meet their basic household needs.
Amidst this turmoil a powerful initiative was born, called Y OUR STORIES - Y Our Stories™ - ‘Amplifying Our Narrative’ is a film and photography project highlighting the inspiration, resilience and legacy of so-called coloured people who were displaced during the group areas act of 1960.
Without a deep understanding of the different groups that make up our society, it is easy to fall into the trap of stereotyping communities which runs the risk of damaging social cohesion, rather than bringing people closer together. Y OUR STORIES™ have been launched to help overcome stereotypes of the so-called coloured people and help showcase the power, brilliance and beauty of the first-nation people of South Africa.
