In February this year, I lost 2 friends to suicide. Their death hit me so hard that I decided I had to do something to address the issue of mental health among the youth.
Consequently, I started a program called “The Mental Health Hub” which brings together young people for discussions about mental health and how to deal with mental health related challenges as young people.
This program creates a safe space for young people to discuss issues affecting them: ranging from emotions, relationships (intimate, friendships and family) addictions, lifestyles, sexuality, coping with life after school, employment and a few other issues affecting young people in our community.
The most important aspect of this program is the concept of "peer to peer mentorship" where young people subscribing to this program choose (after a careful study) people within their age brackets, to mentor them. We believe that, young people understand the problems they go through, better and they can easily open up to their peers / age mates. So, after understanding the roles and responsibilities towards each other, we encourage young people to identify their peers so they can walk a mentorship journey with them.
The program currently has 65 registered subscribers who meet in small groups (depending on their knowledge and understanding of one another) twice every month and sometimes more, depending on the members availability. Every month, we conduct one general session during which we invite an expert to facilitate a discussion about mental health.
The small group and general sessions are conducted at a place which we sought permission to use from the local authority that is also acquainted wigh outdoor games and other fun facilities.
