Madhvi Chittoor has been advocating for environmental causes ever since viewing the a documentary about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch at age 5. She was saddened to learn facts such as that the world produces more than 14 millions tons of Styrofoam and 2.41 million tons of plastic each year, much of which ends up in the ocean.
The devastating harm of plastic pollution to marine wildlife inspired Madhvi to write a book about microplastics within the food chain and landfills. She pushed the cause even further by convincing Former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and current Governor Jared Polis to declare April as Plastic and Styrofoam Pollution Awareness Month in Colorado.
Madhvi has also earned the name the #NoStyrofoamNinja for her advocacy campaign for her school district to prevent the waste of 7.6 million Styrofoam trays each year by switching to compostable trays. Plastic takes 500-1000 years to biodegrade, while Styrofoam lasts forever, making it extremely important to find solutions to reduce and eliminate plastic waste.
She continues to raise awareness about the plastic pollution crisis through her powerful public speaking events. At the Global Climate Strike Rally in Denver, Madhvi shared a stage with other young environmental activists such as Greta Thunberg. Recently, she also testified to the Colorado legislature and helped pass three bills for environmental protection.
Madhvi's current campaign is to "Ban Styrofoam and Glyphosate" in the US, and she is calling on youth worldwide to join the campaign and achieve this goal together globally in the next three years.
