Together with Salvadorian Survivors Network and the Foundation for the Application of Law, Humanium Metal works to remove firearms from communities, transform them into valuable metal products like watches, bracelets, and sculptures and use the funds raised to support initiatives related to reducing gun violence. Humanium Metal is largely run by youth leaders under the age of 35, consisting of Jacqueline Duerre, Lucia Greco, Yusuf Tolosa, and Simon Marke Gran. From working in conflict zones and in security and peacekeeping to business and innovation, the Humanium Metal Team brings together a pool of young leaders with complementary skills and experiences that enable them to work in a large partner ecosystem, together with government agencies, civil society organizations, commercial partners, UN agencies, and universities.
Once a weapons-destruction is completed, the materials are recycled into Humanium Metal or peace metal. This metal is then used by brands, artists, and designers worldwide that create products that both carry the symbolic power of peace and help victims of armed violence. Since 2016, over 12,000 illegal firearms have been turned into peace metal by the Humanium Metal teams in El Salvador and Zambia. The funds raised have been used to support new or existing civil-society programs such as:
◉ Empower survivors of armed violence with income-generation and psychosocial support.
◉ Empower communities to reclaim public spaces as violence-free zones.
◉ Empower youths to choose violence-free paths.
◉ Empower civil society to advocate for legislation that prevents gun violence.
The most recent project launched in the U.S. on October 16th in conjunction with the Portland, Maine police department. Humanium Metal continues to work with companies, individuals, government agencies, and NGOs worldwide to reduce the more than 875 million small arms in circulation. They also lead violence prevention efforts for youth, provide adequate support for survivors, incorporate provisions for violence prevention in every country’s national action plan, and inspire all countries to join the Arms Trade Treaty.
Humanium Metal is a tool that allows tangible reduction on gun violence. It is not only the destruction of arms that counts, but also the strong symbolism of Humanium Metal. The symbol of upcycling a commodity for killing into a commodity for peace, creates a platform for a global movement for peace and security.
