The journey our food takes before reaching our mouths can be full of twists and turns. This includes every part of the process - from the growing, producing, transporting, to even the storing of food. There are a number of ways that both local and global food-systems can impact the environment. Some of the most damaging effects include deforestation, soil degradation, water contamination, and air pollution.
There are steps that we can all take to lower the impact of our meals. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to make drastic or expensive changes to do so. By calculating your "foodprint", you can figure out which parts of your grocery list to tweak. Cutting meat out one day a week, focusing on seasonal foods, buying local food when possible are all simple ways to start. Some people even prefer to get most of their vegetables from household or community-gardens. Community-gardens, in particular, can be a great way to build local food security, share sustainable produce, and build community connections. 2022 Billion Acts Awardee Yellow Barn Farm has taken community-led agriculture to a whole new level by turning a family-owned farm into a regenerative agriculture farm, innovation lab and community events center. Located in Colorado, Yellow Barn Farm is actively working to revitalize this land for low-scale, high-quality food production, community-supported agriculture, and sustainability education. In partnership with Drylands Agroecology Research, the team researches and cultivates practices of regenerative farming, animal management, carbon sequestration, soil health, and dynamic/adaptable organizational structures. All the while, they are producing food alongside and for the community.
