This project from Jiangong Elementary School in Taichung focuses on promoting awareness and ensuring accessibility for students with disabilities. The inspiration came from a class discussion about the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), alongside reading the picture book "Everyone Must Join!" The students became particularly aware of the challenges faced by their classmate Boxian, who has cerebral palsy and struggles with mobility around school.
The class began by investigating the school's accessibility features, identifying areas that required improvement, such as better-connected passageways between buildings and the installation of elevators. Their mission was to make sure Boxian could participate fully in school life, including joining outdoor activities that he had previously been unable to attend.
Through inclusive planning and hands-on actions, the students supported Boxian by designing accessible routes and helping him participate in field trips. They also expanded their efforts to survey the community for accessible facilities and engaged in advocacy, writing letters to government officials to promote the rights and accessibility of all individuals with disabilities. This project not only improved the school's environment but also raised awareness in the community about the importance of universal design and inclusion.
